What is a Notary Public?

A notary public is a person of integrity appointed by the Secretary of State to serve the public as an impartial and unbiased witness by identifying persons who come before the notary.

Why are documents notarized?

To deter fraud. An impartial witness (the notary) ensures that the signer of the document is who they say they are. The notary makes sure that the signer has entered into the agreement knowingly and willingly.

Does witnessing/attesting a signature require the document be signed in the presence of the notary?

YES. If the notary certificate states “subscribed and sworn/affirmed to me...,” then it must be signed in the notary’s presence.

What are the common types of notarizations?

Acknowledgments, Jurats and Copy Certifications.

Acknowledgment - An Acknowledgment is a formal declaration made before the notary that the person signing the document did so freely, voluntarily, and for the purpose stated in the document. The document does not have to be signed in the notary’s presence, but the signer must personally appear before the notary at the time of notarization to acknowledge he signed it.

Jurat (Verification)
- The main purpose of a Jurat is to compel truthfulness in a signer. The signer must take a verbal oath and sign the document in front of the notary. The notary certifies that the individual came before him, signed and verbally swore to the truthfulness of the statements in the document. A typical oath is “Do you swear that the statements in this document are true?”

Copy Certification - A certified copy is a document that has been verified as an accurate reproduction of the original, privately held document. Documents for copy certification include business documents, diplomas and passports.

Acceptable Forms of Identification

1.) Personal Knowledge
2.) A photo ID with a signature issued by a government agency (valid driver's license, passport, school or work ID, etc).
3.) Credible Witness- The signer may be identified upon the oath or affirmation of one credible witness who personally knows the notary.

Is the pre-wedding consultation free?
Yes.  I meet with couples face-to-face. This meeting, at a mutually-convenient location, generally lasts 30 minutes.  You will receive a packet, which includes ceremony wording and vows from which to choose.

If we choose you to perform our ceremony, do you require a fee to hold our date?

Yes, I require a non-refundable deposit. The balance of the fee is due at rehearsal.

Do you offer a discount if we choose a pre-written ceremony?
Yes.  You can choose from elegant pre-written ceremonies and save money.

If we are not religious, must we have prayer or scripture in our ceremony?
No. I want you both to be comfortable with the ceremony on your wedding day.

Can we review the ceremony before our wedding date?
Absolutely! I will email it to you and ask you to review it to make sure it’s perfect for you. We can make any changes you want.

Can we write our own vows?
Yes! I can provide some samples or help you create your vows, should you need assistance.

What is included in your services, and what do you charge?

According to your desires, I prepare a custom ceremony, conduct the rehearsal if there is not a wedding planner, perform the ceremony, and file your marriage license within 15 days as required by Iowa law.

What if we don’t want to have a rehearsal?
Although I believe a rehearsal helps ensure that your wedding day goes smoothly, and I highly recommend it, I do not insist upon having a rehearsal.

What happens during the rehearsal?
We walk through parts of the ceremony requiring movement: The processional, hand-off of bouquet, ring exchange, any rituals (i.e., candle lighting, honoring the parents, the recessional, etc.)  Although that sounds simple enough, rehearsing these parts minimizes confusion, and helps reduce wedding-day jitters!

Do you stay for the wedding reception?
Although I appreciate your hospitality, I typically do not stay for the reception.

Is it proper etiquette to send the minister an invitation?
Invitations cost money.  I already know I am supposed to be there.  You do not have to send me a wedding invitation, but you can if you like.

Is it proper etiquette to tip the minister?
Some people might say it is good etiquette to tip the minister.  Although you can tip the minister if you choose, it is not required or expected.

Do you dress up for theme weddings?
I do.  However, my costume rental fee is the responsibility of the couple.
